Camp Independence

Started in 2003, Camp Independence takes place at Torino Ranch in July, and is the only overnight camp for children with bleeding disorders in the state of Nevada. Camp is one of the most crucial educational programs that we can offer our bleeding disorders youth. Camp is a medically supervised, safe place where children with bleeding disorders can experience life as a “normal” child and to interact with others with bleeding disorders.  Camp is filled with traditional summer activities such as canoeing, swimming, dancing, drama, and arts and crafts; however, Camp Independence also provides an opportunity for campers to learn how to self-infuse (inject clotting factor into a vein) with medical supervision, helping these children become more independent in managing their condition.  Camp provides activities that build independence, confidence, self-esteem and lasting friendships which lead to life-long skills and support.  A regular summer camp is not an option due to liability issues and the fact that camp counselors, teachers, and general practitioners and nurses without specialty most often lack the education needed to care for a child who has a bleeding disorder.  More importantly, Camp lets the children know they aren't alone with their medical issues and there are others like them with diseases like Hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, and other bleeding disorders.
Hello to Camp Independence Campers, Volunteers and Donors

We had a wonderful camp in 2011 with the theme of “Game-A-Palazzo”.  There were many games and activities throughout camp with the final event featuring “If You’ve Got A Minute….You Might Win It”.  There were different challenges just like the television show.  It was great fun and even more fun to watch everyone try and beat the clock. The evening concluded with a DJ, dancing and ice cream floats.

A special thank you to Cox Children’s Charities for awarding Camp Independence a $5,000 grant for 2011. Grant funds were used to supply campers with cabin games and supplies as well as camp tee shirts for campers and volunteers. Thank you to COX Charities for supporting our Bleeding Disorders summer camp for Nevada youth.  All the campers and volunteers noticed the additional to Camp this year….A new and improved GA-Ga pit donated by BioMed. Their staff and volunteers made a special trip to camp and spent the week end building the new Ga-Ga pit. It was twice the size of our last one and it was wonderful.

There are so many people to name and say thank you so this is a “group thank you”. Without all of our donors and volunteers Camp Independence would not happen.  It was great to see so many returning volunteers. There were also 5 Leaders in Training campers that returned as volunteers.  Everyone did such an awesome job at camp that it is our hope you enjoyed camp and will pass the word to friends and family and return to “Camp Independence 2012”. Check the foundation website often for more information. Camp photos have been posted. Be sure to check them out and remember all the good times everyone had at camp.

As co-directors these past 8 years, we want to say how much fun (and work) it has been to be a part of Camp Independence. We will never forget all the water wars (and soaking we received), rock climbing, canoeing, swimming, boot camp and of course the all popular Ga-Ga pit. We do hope to come back next year and visit everyone.

If anyone has any ideas about new activities or a theme for next year, please contact the foundation office. We welcome any and all suggestions.
